"Honest art is always a self-portrait".

(Svend Wiig Hansen, 1958)

Svend Wiig Hansen - GIGANT is, along with the exhibition catalogue, the result of a cooperation between three Jutlandic museums. Through separate exhibitions, The Art Museum Brundlund Castle, HEART, and CHPEA present various aspects of Svend Wiig Hansen's universe.

The South Jutlandic artist Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997) holds an important position in the history of Danish art, as an artist whose work is characterised by creative force, volume, and an untamed playfulness. GIGANT, the title of the exhibition, refers to the scope of the exhibition as well as the larger-than-life personality of the artist.

The exhibition at Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt's Museum takes as its focus Svend Wiig Hansen's many self-portraits in different artistic media such as drawings, graphic design, gouache, and small sculptures. It represents the hitherto largest collection of Svend Wiig Hansen's portraits.

While the many artistic representations of human faces give a unique insight into Svend Wiig Hansen's own personality, they also fit into his interpretation of what you might call the human condition. From the 1960s and onwards these masks and portraits are produced in ever growing numbers by the Svend Wiig Hansen, gaining a new artistic intimacy through their strong connection with the giant's own state of mind.

THE EXHIBITION HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH SUPPORT FROM: A. P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til Almene Formaal, Augustinus Fonden, Beckett-Fonden, Knud Højgaards Fond, and Museum Sønderjyllands Forskningsfond.
