Special Exhibition: Karel Appel

20/05/2004

20 May – 29 Sept. 2004
Exhibition Catalogue: Karel Appel

Over the summer, the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Ese Alfelt Museum presents an exhibition of works by Karel Appel, born in Holland. The exhibition is the first major one-man show of Appel's work in Denmark in 40 years, spanning five decades of his production.

The exhibition is conceived by the Cobra expert Per Hovdenakk and includes painting, works on paper, sculpture and assemblage, showing Appel to be an experimental artist who is constantly  developing. The museum has been guaranteed works on loan from Danish and foreign museums as well as private collectors. It has long been a wish to present Appel in Herning, as he, like Carl-Henning Pedersen, has his roots in spontaneous abstract painting. They are both among the founders and pioneers of  the Cobra movement, today with a long, many-sided and extensive production behind them. Another quite specific connection exists between the two, as Carl-Henning Pedersen today lives in Chateau de Molesmes, which he purchased from Karel Appel in the 1970s.

1976-2003: Carl-Henning Pedersen once a year curates and hangs his own and Else Alfelt's works at the museum in consultation with Sidsel Ramson.
