Renowned CoBrA artist Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913-2007) is primarily known for his imaginative and fantastical paintings. Images in Clay is the first museum exhibition to focus entirely on the artist’s works in clay.

The exhibition explores the entire colourful spectrum of Carl-Henning Pedersen’s ceramic works. From his monumental ornamentations for the inner Angli Courtyard in Herning (1966-68) to his collaborations with Royal Copenhagen in the early 1990s where he created a variety of works in both porcelain and earthenware. Towards the end of this decade, Pedersen favoured a more experimental approach and created a number of clay figurines, all bearing the marks of the artist’s expressive and spontaneous creative process.

As a young man, Carl-Henning Pedersen dreamed of becoming a composer, and the playful and rhythmic brush strokes on his ceramic works invoke a tonality of their own. Composer Ditte Rønn has explored the distinct tone of Carl-Henning Pedersen’s ceramic works. The resulting sound work In My Hands forms the soundtrack for seven carefully selected ceramic works in the exhibition.

The starting point for Carl-Henning Pedersen – Images in Clay is the generous donation of 36 of the artist’s ceramic works from his widow, Sidsel Ramson, to CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art

The exhibition has been created in a close collaboration between Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum and CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art in Middelfart.
